RIVALS IN RADIO

GOOD OR BAD ANNOUNCER

A keen argument is in progress among radio enthusisnts as to whether the announcer wlio broadcast the de- scription of the Canberra ceremonies was as good at his job as some of the other announcers who would have

like to do the work. The Postal *Dc-,

partmenl contrails the \vhole broadcast, arranging to link up the broadcasting stations in Sydney, Melbourne, Bris- bane and Adelaide;- therefore, one an-

nouncer had to officiate for all the sta- tions. Each wanted to choose the an- nouncer-Its own man, of course.

The department, however, selected Mr. Frank Russell, who i.s associated with the Melbourne Station 3liO.. It happens that Mr. Russell had recently criticised publicly and adversely the way the Sydney stations haVl. ' dealt with the visit or the Duke of York. So that when he was given the respon- sibility of Canberra the Sydney an- nouncers-and doubtless many listen- ers also-were * on tho watch for any mistakes. "

Since then he" has been criticised

searchingly.^ "Uncle George," of 3BL, would have been ten times as good, ¡dfy

some. Others think that the "Hello Man" of ¿KG would have been ideal. Still again the opinion is expressed that Mr. Anderson, manager of 2FC, or Mr. Halbert, of 2FC, would have boen superior.

However, that may he, both the Syd- ney stations which broadcast the Duke and Melba ceremonies are receiving congratulations by telegraph, telephone and post. From Marrar Creek, away out west beyond Nyngan, carne,a tele- gram to 2FC:,-"Excellent reception, splendid full loud-speaker .strength. Oui crowds here enjoyed It very much."

From Urunga, North Coast, came   word: "Canberra programme clearly heard by large audiences, including all the children." A message from Young stated: "Congratulations and apprecia- tions on Canberra broadcast. A great number of townspeople were delighted with the transmission."

So there you are-apparently every listener claims the right to hear for himself and express his own opinion emphatically.
