In Cloudy Bay there are two French whalers, the Ketoa, Bremer, 19 months out, 900 barrels—six of her hands ran away with a whale boat and gear while we were there ; the ——, Captain Baxter, 20 months out, 1600 barrels. The schooner Kate has been losl off Cape Terrawati, bound from Port Nieholson to Nelson ; value of cargo £1600, and very little saved ; and it is reported that the schooner Blossom, is lost at the Chatham Islands, particulars of which I shall send you when I get there. The shore whaling parties, vessels and all, are doing very badly ; and there is no chance of getting half the oil that was procured last year. You may expect to hear from me by every opportunity."
