THE OPERATION OF THE LAND ACT
ON THE DOWNS.
THE D. D. Gazette gives a list of the lots of land leased at the Toowoomba office since the Act came into operation :
Sehroder, Brown, and Otto, parish of Geham, 116a. ; J. Brown, ditto, 73a. ; G. Say, ditto, 42a. ; Folp aul Plant, ditto, 45o. ; Blackie, ditto, 82a. Grisbrook, ditto, 42a. 2r. 22p. ; Ti. T. Gre- gory, ditto, 577a 3r. 4p. j W. M'Millan, 53a. Sr. 18p. ; M'Cafforty and Fitzpatrick, ditto, 161a. Sr. 38p. ; Qt. Downes, ditto, 147a. Or. 6p. ; A. Langton, ditto, 45a. ; J. Bailey, ditto, 199a. Sr. ; total, 1705a. lr. 5p.
It will be observed (says the Gazette) that more than two-thirds of the total quantity has been taken up since the first of this month, pre- vious to which there was scarcely any land of any good, available under its provisions, and the quantity now open is also very small and much scattered, and is not suitable to any person who might require to take up a farm of over two or
three hundred acres.
A sale of Crown Lands was held at the Land
Office yesterday, at 11 o'clock. The first lots offered were 50 town lots of one acre each in the new township of Jondaryan, the whole of which, however, was passed without a single bid, affording another instancoeof the gross stupidity (to say nothing else) of a Government who will lay out five sections and call it a town- ship, without making a single reservation of the surrounding lands, nearly the whole of which have been selected and purchased under the pre- emptive right, and fenced in with wire fencing. There were next sold 16 country lots, forming a sort of semi-circle round the town of Jon- daryan, the whole of which, comprising some 729 acres, were purchased by tho proprietors of Jondaryan Station, so that had any persons been foolhardy enough to have purchased in the so-called township, they would have been quite unable to have got to it all, except by one narrow road leading from the main Dalby road, or
by the line of railway. The whole of the land on Cooby Creek was also passed. Inconsequence of there being no competition, those persons in attendance who came expressly for that land, seeing such was the case, deferred taking it up until it comes within the provisions of the Leasing Act. It is, however, a serious impediment to the settlement and prosperity of this district that so small a quantity is available. The following lots were sold on the Geham road, and situated just be- yond Mr. Perkins' Highfields Hotel. Lot 113, 9 acres W. H. Byers; lot 114, 9 acres, F. Springer ; lot 115, 9 acres, F. Springer lot 121, 8 acres 3 roods 34 perches, J. Grisbrook ; lot 128, 8 acres 2 roods l8 perches, T. Bowden, all at the upset price. The total sale realized about £774, exclusive of deed fees.
From the Warwick Argus we quote the follow- ing on the same subject :-The following selection of land have been made under the Leasing Act since the public sale which took place here on the 28th February last :-Geo. Clark, 1520 acres; W. B. Tooth, 2306a. 3r. 8p., J. W. Wood, 1641a. 2r. 25p. Lot 4, consisting of 45 acres, was purchased by James Black, Samuel Smith, and Thomas Lee. Thus the whole of the land offered for sale on the 28th of Feb ruary has been taken up, and not an inch is now left for the selector. We hope to see more land put up directly, as it seems to be in demand. It would be more desirable, however, that some conditions be placed on the purchase of the land, otherwise it will fall into the hands of speculators.
