A New Antiseptic.

A cable message, received on August 5, mentioned a new antiseptic dressing for wounds A Tans messigc of that, date says

-An achievement of Dr. Alexis Carrel, of the Kockeleller Instílate for Medical Re i search, and Di. Ü Dakin, of the Lister In

stitute, in inventing a new and remarkable ¡antiseptic for the treatment of wounds, is

highly acclaimed in medical circles here

I the "Matin" to-day prints a laudatory [article, describing tue cxti»ordinalih sue cessful insults obtained uy Dr. Carrel with hu, new antiseptic tieatment at the Com piegne Military Hospital

The most powerful antiseptic known to science is li j poohlontc of lime, but its use has been restricted hitherto, owing to ita destructive action on the tissues, due to ils extreme acidity, und to the fact that ii is not a stable compound, and decomposes rapidly

Urs Dakin and Canel found, after ex tciiMvo cvpei inicnts, that the acidity of the hypochloute might be counteracted by the addition of a certain percentage of c irbonatc of hine, and that the addition of boric acid preserved the hypochlorite from decompo

sitian

Dr Carrel's method of employing this treatment consist« in introducing rubber drains filled with hypochloute into open wounds, and surrounding them with sponge or gaiue, saturated with a solution of car- bonate of lime. The results ure said to be remarkable, rendering infection of the wounds, and paiticularly gangrene, prac-

tically impossible.

Professor Landouzy has lectured on the new antneptie before the members of the Academy of Science, The "Matin," in prais- ing Dr. Carrel, also eulogises Madame Carrel far her work as superintendent of the nurs-

ing staff at CompMgno. J
