SUPPOSED CAfTUHE OF A VESSEL.

"We bate gleaned ihe following from the log book of the 'Porletiia. -which shows the necessity of «esset« proceeding -towards India or China going amply provided with arms and ammunition. Although a supposition, according to the account, there is every reason to imagine thal a vessel, lias been captured by proas, near the Straits of Macassar : " Friday, November luth.- Fiom light airs, inclinable to eulin, the south point of Snurata 1-d.md bearing south- east by south, the Twins south east by south, and the peak .of 'Paramatta Island south-east by east ; beard distant 'firing of heavy guns, and on going to the matt-head, saw, 'bearing east by north, distant from three to four leagues, what appeared lo be three vessels ; two were distinctly >iiilile : they were then in the vicinity of Wellesley shoal, ssduid -down in Horsbuig's charts ; but whether any of them were ashore or not, we could not ascertain-although, from the distance we weie off, it had all the appearance that the smaller vessels were allocking the larger ona. The firing was heavy mid irregular, and as we were in a -measure without arms ourselves, our vessel very deep and foul, the wind very light, so that it would have tuken a long time to come up with them, and the current setting so-the north-eastward, we deemed it prudent to lack to the -westward. Remainder of the ¿4 hours variable winds, willi occasional (quails. At 10 II.in. saw a proa on the weather beam under u crowd of canvas, although it was then a calm, which kept in that position Hie remuinder of the day ; nt night it came on hazy, and tre then lost sight of her.''-Sydney Morning Herald.
