THE TURE.

NOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS.

(Bt'* Pegasus.") ^(

Fairly good nominations were received "m Monday, foB-the spring meeting of'the Bunbury ? Racing' Club, which is to take jlace on Tlvurstlay, November l8. Entries tor the Auction Stakes will close on Mon iay next.

As usual the field for the V.R.C. Oaks

to-day has 'dwindled down to small pro *>ortions,-Wiy'-*'three being left in the ¿lassie race. The trio, who will face Mr. Watson this' afternoon are-Murella, by Nordenfeldt/Zitella, a daughter of Tren- ton, and Eleusive, another daughter of the expatriated sire. It will thus be seen that all are p-randdaughters oE Musket. Mirella ançli Eleusive may fight out the finish, a.ndaihef latter should win. The history ofi the race, however, abounds in surprises and backers have gone down »gain and again.

It was reported yesterday that a Perth Sportsman had purchased a well-known

Sonth Australian horse with the object of winning the Perth Cnp.

Mr. J. H. Smith and the committee of the AV.A.T.C. deserve much credit for the liberal schemo of improvements now neariug completion at the Perth course. The general arrangements will be equal to the best appointed courses in the East, while the artistic mauner in which the grounds have been laid out and bcantified, will form an agreeable surprise to the thousands who will visit the New Year meeting of the premier club. The supply of artesian water will enable the caretaker to thicken and keep green the carpet of grass on tho'lawn.

In the Fying Stakes at Flemington, this afternoon, it is probable that Amberite, Aurum and Gaulus will be among the starters. Aurum on his form in the Guineas and Melbourne Cup should put down both the Cup winners, and it is almost certain that the St. Alb?ns colt will start favourate. In this race' Hova defeated Wallace, and Hopscotch easily disposed of Lieutenant and Bloodshot. Perhaps the most memorable and exciting struggle ever witnessed in the lace was between Malua and Newstead, when the colt beat the brilliant son of St Albans. In this race also Carbine had a tremendous tussle with Penauce, and he only beat the two-year old on the post.

In the Veteian Stakes run at Fleming- ton, this afternoon, Battalion is top weight with Ost. 61b., Auraria is next with 9st., and Gaulns is on the same mark with the Grafter 41b. less. AVait-a-Bit and Positauo aro also on the Sst. 101b. mark, and Paul Pry has only 21b. less. The AVestralian is

sure to run well.

The nominator writes to say that the name Munda, which appears in the nomina tians for the Coolgardie meeting, should

have been Thunder.

Hugh Hiscutt, the leading steeplechase jockey of the colony, has returned to Perth

from a visit to Arictoria.

At a committee meeting of the AV.A. Turf Club on Tuesday evening the follow- ing jockeys were granted licenses :-G. Simons, A. Milton, li. McMahon, R. Ellis, A. Dewar, F. Dechart, J. Barry. In addi- tion to a jockey's license P. O'Reilly was granted a trainer's license and J. King and AV. J. Miller were also granted trainer's licenses. The applications of J. Storam, R. Jackson and J. Keegan for jockey's licenses were held over pending the applicants' appearance in person before the committee. AV. Henry, P. Hunter, and H. Albini also applied for jockey's licenses, but consideration was deferred for the production of further

references.

Mr. E. Ingram was elected a member of the AV.T.C. on Monday evening.

E. Kirke, the jockey who was suspended on October 21 for three months, has been granted a hearing before tlio AVestern Australia Turt Club on a date to be fixed.

THE CASE OF J. C. FITZGERALD.

TO THE SPORTING EDITOR.

Sir,-I was requested this evening to attend a meeting of the AV.A. League of AVheelmen to defend myself against the charge of having grievously assaulted an- other rider. Much to my surprise and dis just, I found the League Council repre- sented by the secretary onlj*, the complainant having also failed to attend. Considering the serious nature of the charge, and as it was also a covert threat to affect my appeal respecting the filial of the mile handicap run on October 21st. I naturally expected the case to be investigated and not be held in suspense any longer. I liad many witnesses, who were eye-witnesses to the whole occurrence to prove that I onlj- acted in self-defence. Now I find after all this bother that I am no better off. It is very strange, this coincidence, tho complainant failing- to present himself and to sustain his alleged charge, and the council treating its own official notice concerning this case with contempt. Perchance the}* have alreadj-'investigated tho affair and found, like the old hen that swallowed the boot-lace with a boot at the end of it, that it is a case of biting off more than they care to swallow. Anywaj-, so many errone- ous reports have been circulated by certain interested parties with intent to do me an injuiy, thatl claim your well-known spirit of fair plaj* for the insertion of this letter.

Yours, etc.
