Cairns,
[FROM OUR OWN COPRFSPONDENT. |
14th January, 1S82.
WE havo bad a great rumpus in town over tho manner of caigo delivery by tho A.S.N. Company. Last week's steamer, owing to in- sufficient lighter service, had to carry on a lot of cargo to Cooktown. Ou the back trip there was enough rice and other goods from Cooktown to fill the Arulcau tender, so the short delivered southern cargo was «gain can ied past the port.
The Elamang this week filled up the steam tender firat, then a long-boat, kindly lent by Captain M'Dougall, of tho Hopeful, in which a few packages were placed and tho passengers accommodated. (The arrivals from South this miil wero unusually largo.) After all, aa much cargo aa was delivered waa over-carried, allowing the urgent necessity for increased lighter accom- modation to meet our fast-growing traffic.
Tho Mulgrave goldfield people work along quietly. Nothing startling up there. The upper camp plant may be at work soon, crush- ing ; I have no definite nowa, however, about it.
A successful meeting of subscribers to tho hospital came off on Monday. The trea- surer's statement showed a credit balance at 31st December, 1S81, of nenrly £120 ; and it ia estimated that a gross amouut of not less than £500 will Bhow in this year'a books. Last year was commenced with a deficit-a Bmall one, truly-and the funds during the year had to be supplemented by a special grant, which will not bo required thia year. This great chango in the prospects of our hospital funds ÍB of course due to rapid increase in population. The subscribers' list is pretty long.
At the land court sitting on AVednesday, over 14,500 acres were taken up ; and the thirst for our lands by Southern capitalists bas not ceased.
Owing to more than one application for leaeo of wharf frontage having gone in, the lease will, I hear, be put up for competition shortly. Six monlha ago there was not a bid.
Tho latest reports to hand concerning the new track to Herberton apeak very favourably of it. AVe only require a moderate Bum of money laid out on the apur leadiug over the range, and the road will, for all practical purposes, be complete.
