ROCKHAMPTON, May 3.
The petition for the reprieve of Hop Kee, who was sentenced to death for the murder of a countryman at Mount Morgan, was forwarded to Brisbane by to-night's mail. It bears 1750 signatures, including those of a number of Chinamen here and at Mount Morgan. Most of the prominent public, men in both places have also signed the document, all the signa- tures to which were collected personally by the prisoner's countryman.
Four additional cases of infringement of the Stamp Act, all arising through neglect to stamp indentures, were heard at the Police Court to-day. Sydney Williams, against whom three charges were laid, was fined £5 19s., and Leopold Reich was fined £4 8s. 8d.
COOKTOWN, May 3.
The Merrie England arrived last night. Everything was quiet in New Guinea when she left. Sir W. Macgregor and Lady Macgregor were at Port Moresby.
Ah Hein, who is charged with burglary, has been committed for trial on three charges, and there are three others pending.
The recent heavy gales have moderated, and
the weather is now fine.
THURSDAY ISLAND, May 3.
Last week another case of attempted rob- bery occurred, showing the necessity for more police protection. The house of Mr. Mogg, who was away on the shelling grounds, was entered by a coloured man. Mrs. Mogg bravely seized the intruder, but he escaped. A few days previously a similar case occurred in another dwelling.
On Friday last the employees of Messrs. Burns, Philp, and Co., .presented Mr, V. R. Bowden, late manager for the firm here, and who is about to leave for the East, with a handsome silver epergne. ." Mr B. Norton, the oldest employee of the firm here, made the presentation on behalf of the others, and in doing so referred to the good feeling which had always existed between Mr. Bowden and the employees. Mr. Bowden in returning thanks said he hoped the same feeling would
continue.
WINDORAH, May 5.
There passed on the 30th April 1000 mixed cattle from Currawilla to Echuca, Martin and Co. owners, Major in charge, travelling via Eulo.
JUNDAH, May 3.
Since last report the following are the stock passings:-On the 28th April, 1000 bullocks from Elderslie, travelling southwards, Sir Samuel Wilson owner, Mr. Harrison ¡in charge
on the 2nd May, 1300 bullocks from Millungera, Flinders River, Meredith, Menzies, and Co. owners, J. Thumpkins in charge; also 8000 wethers and 4000 ewes from Yandama, Mil- parinka, Dawes and Co. owners, Langheim drover, travelling towards Hughenden for sale.
The weather is dry and cold.
