A fair amount of prospecting is evidently being done in tho outlying parts of the gold- field and the district adjoining it, for upon inquiry at the Mining Registrar's office wo leam that a number of prospecting protection areas have been lately applied for and granted in the vioinity of the Exhibition, Enterprise, anti Veteran reefs, the Neardie-road, Pie Creek, Six-milo Creek, and Jimna Creek.
** Tho local branch of the Queensland National Bank despatched an escort south yesterday morning with 7588oz. Gdwt. 6gr. of gold.
North Hibernia and Homeward Bound (Two mile), May 12.-We have sunk 10ft., total 161ft.; and timbered 27ft., total timbered 153£t. The first 13ft. was in good black rock, but the last 3ft. was conglomerate, with good slate floors showing a groat deal of mineral.
Noith Smithfield, May 12_Tho south drive at the 753ft. level has boen advanced 15ft., total 07ft. from the crosscut ; the country is davk conglomerate. The reef will average lOin. Wo have out out a chamber at this level in order to sink a winze and have sunk it 5ft.; the country is fine-grained conglomerate. Wo aro carry- ing three slopes after this lovel ; some fair gold has been seen from the second stope np to tho intermediate level. The south level in the winze has been driven 14ft.; there is still a large body of crushing stuff, allowing good gold., The north lovel has been driven 10ft.; the quartz in this end will average 3in. in good slate country.
Great New Zealand, May 12.-Driving and stoping on the eastern reef at tho 272ft. level
have been carried on as usual. The north level has been advanced lift., total 183ft. from the crosscut. The country is the same as last reported. The reef in tho stopes over this level has improved in size, and shows botter gold. I have picked out two dynamite cases of stone, which shows very fair gold. There ia good gold still showing in tho face. The crosscut going west for this reef in tho south end has been advanced 5ft.; total, 40ft. The men have boen taken from here and put lo cross- cut west, -loft, north of the main crosscut. The crosscut has been run in 12£t., and wo have cut a vein of quartz 4ft. back from the face, show- ing nice gold. Wo started to crosscut east in the south and on tho middle repf nt the inter- mediate level to see it we could pick up any more quartz. The crosscut has been put in 17ft. in good slate country. Tho rise on the middloreef in tho north end at the 235ft. level has beon put up Gft.; total, 22ft. from the floor of tho drive. The country is a dark con- glomerate. [The malinger reported last night having picked out 50oz. of gold in specimens from a portion of the eastern reef that came down with the shots at the 272ft. level. Good gold still showing in the face.]

Nos. 3 and 4 North Gltinrairo Tribute, May 12.-The crosscut oast from the winzo at the 423ft. lovel lins been driven Oft., total loft. Wo aro getting breastheads faced with quartz, and the |country is black rock. The crosscut weat at tho 339ft. level, north of the slido, has been driven 10ft., total 03ft.; the country is conglomerate with slate floors. At the western shaft tho crosscut west has hoon driven 12ft., total 109ft. Wo passed through a calcspar formation dipping east. On tho other side of tho crcsscoiu'se the country is slate with plumbago floors.
No. 2 North Groat Eastern, May 12.-The shaft has been sunk 17ft., total G70ft. from the surface. We havo had a few good floors coming in from tho west, and under tho last one cut in the bottom tho rock has become much finer in tho grain. Tho eastern crosscut at the 040ft. level has been advanced lift., total 31ft. from the shaft ; the country passed through, and at present, is hard pebbly con- glomerate.
New Caledonia, May 13.-We have driven 3ft, on the eastern reef and started to sink a winze, which has been sunk 5ft. There aro horn 5in. to Oin. of quartz in the centre of tho winze ; we havo not got tho footwall or the hanging-wall. There is quartz in the west or tho hanging-wall side of the winze, and several loaders on the footwall side. The country is a hard fine-grained congloméralo. Wo came on a thin floor of black rock and plumbago to-day. I cannot say much about it as I have not broken the floor. There is some good country north of the crosscourse, it being black rock, with floors of gray slate and a little black plumbago on the floors.
No. 2 South Great Eastern, May 13.-Tho
rise from the 530ft. level has been put up lift., j total 38ft. The country is black rock and slate of a very hard tight nature. This leaves us from 20ft. to 22ft. moro to riso to break through to tho South Glanmire and Monkland
No. 4 reef.
No. 1 South Great Eastern, May 13.-The ¿Irivo north along the boundary at the 600ft. lovel lins boen advanced 12ft.; total, 21ft. There is no quart?, here at present. The slopes over tho intermediate level havo been carried on as usual. I have not seen much gold here during the past fortnight, although tho country is good slate. The country over tile 550ft. level is slate in the footwall and con- glomerate in the hanging-wall.
No. 5 North Glanmire, May l8.-The drives north and south on the break at the 200ft. level bave each been driven 5ft. There is
about Gin. of crushing stuff, showing fair gold.
No. 5 North Phoenix, May 13.-The crosscut east at the 784ft. lovel has been driven 20ft.; total, 364ft. The country is still hard pebbly
conglomerate.
Glanmire P.C. Tribute, May 13.-The drive on No. 2 reef has been continued ; tho drive is going in on a big break -which we are taking out about 9ft. in width and 14ft. in height. The country is conglomerate and slate floors, and is improving as we go north. The reef on the hanging-wall will average 1ft. and carries fair gold. On the footwall there is a big body of crushing stuff, carrying a little gold. The stopes over the 280ft. lovel have been continued; the reef keeps very small and carries a Uttle gold.
No. 2 South Phoenix, May 12.-The eastern croscut at the 540ft. level at tho western shaft has been advanced 24ft.; total, 259ft. from the shaft. The formation mentioned in my last report left us about 7¡n. of quartz in the bottom of the drive. In the western crosscut at the 480ft. level, the country is still a hard gray conglomerate.

The Brilliant crushing for the past month was 2200 tons for 2400oz.
At the Sunburst C5 tons of stone were raised for the month, making a crushing of 300 tons now going through at the One-and-AUmill.
At Mills's Day Dawn the reef varies from 18in. to 12ft. in the various faces. During the fortnight ending the 10th instant 2520 trucks
of stone hauled.
At Clark's Brilliant, Worcester, and Victory
the drive from No. 1 crosscut is in 22ft. There has been a nice reef in the drivo, varying from Oin. to 1ft., and showing good gold, but it has gone up overhead.
Mills's United lins declared a dividend of 3d., equal to £3750.
The Golden Gate Ima crushed 470 tons of stone for 679oz. 2dwt. of gold, and a dividend of Is., equal to £2400, has been declared.
At the final olean-up from the Brilliant and St. George United 007 tons orushed yielded
GoGoz.

Golden Gate, May 7.-No. IA Level: The winzo has been sunk a further distance of 8ft. Oin., making it 26ft. from the level. The reef is 3ft. thick and 3ft. of formation, being of fair quality stone. No. 1 East Level : The crosscut horn this level has been driven 10ft.; total from drive, 48ft. The reef is 1ft. Oin. thick, and improving in appearance. The stope in the No. 2 lovel is getting very close up to the bottom of the No. 1 west level, with a reef from 2ft. up to 8ft. thick, and of the general average
stone. The crosscut from No. 2 oast level has been driven 5ft. Gin.; total from drivo, 50ft. There is a great change in the ground, with quartz leaders intermixed. Tho winze from the No. 2 level upon the hanging-wall reef has been sunk 13ft.; total from level, 46ft., with a reef 2ft. thick and of good quality. The stopps in the back of No. 3 west levol aro still looking fairly good, with patches of good stone inter- mixed with the formation, being about 4ft. thick. The No. 3 hanging-wall lovel has been driven 12ft., total from crosscut 162ft, The reef is lit. Oin. thick and of good stone. I havo started stoping at the No. 4 west level upon a reef varying in thickness from 1ft. to 4ft. I havo started a orosseut at the No. 4 east level, which has been driven 10ft. from the level to cut the hanging-wall reef. The No. 4 west levol winzo has been sunk lift., total from drive 42ft.; the reef is 3ft. thick. Stone raised, 371 tons ; carted to the Bonnie Dundee mill 347 tons of stone, and crushed 470 tons, a portion of which has been taken out ot the yard,
leaving still in the yard G8 tons. The yield of smelted gold from the Bonnie Dundee mill is Ö70OZ. 2dxvt.
Millican's Caledonia, May G.-Wages mon have sunk 14ft. Gin., making totnl depth from the surface 410ft. AVe are noxv in the footxvall 14ft., and 31ft. below the top formation. Tho ground is hard gray granite and bad for shoot- ing.
No. 4.x. West Day Dawn, May 9.-The under lio shaft has been sunk a further depth of 10ft. for the fortnight, making it 80ft. in depth from No. 7 plat. Wo are carrying it 7ft. in height clear of timber. There is a good deal of irregular quartz in the formation xve ure taking, but nono of it carrying gold. The top xvest lovel has boon extended Eft. during the first week of this fortnight, making it 95ft. in from tho pass. Tho stopos are worked out. We have hauled Ï0 tons of stone for the month,
which has boon carted and crushed at the Rainbow mill, and 7 tons broken beloxv.
Sunburst, May 7.-No. 2 west winze lins boon sunk a further distanco of 12ft. for tho fortnight, making a total of 9Gft. We broke through to No. 3 west drive on Friday last. No. 3 xvest drivo has been driven a further dis- tance of 20ft., making it 251ft. from shaft. Tho lovel is noxv xvithin 30£t. or 35ft. of the Golden
Gate boundary ; there is about 18in. of stone in this level, which is of fair quality. No. 1 winze in No. 3 xvest level has been sunk a further distanco of 10ft., making a total of 82ft. There are only 3in, or 4in. of stone showing at present. No. 2 winze on No. 8 west lex'el lins boon sunk a further distanco of lift., making totnl 20£t. since commencement; there is about 3ft. of stone in this xvinze, xvhich is rather whito in appearance. No. 2 enst xvinze has been sunk 15ft., making a totnl of 25ft., with about Gin. of stono. No. 4 xvest lovel has been driven 23ft. since starting, Oft. Gin. o£ xvhich has been driven on wages and 16ft. Gin. on contract; there is about 8in. of good-looking stono in the faco of this drive. No. 4 east lox'ol has been driven lift. Gin., 3ft. of xvhich has been driven on xvages and 8ft. Gin. 011 contract. There is no stono showing in the face of this drivo at present. Started to crush at the Oue-and-All mill on tho 9th instant.
Mills's Day Dawn United, May 9.-The underlie shaft has been sunk a further depth of 12ft. by contract. The formation is inter- mixed with veins of quartz carrying lOin. of solid reef on tho footxvall, of medium quality. No. G East Level : Operations have been con- tinued on tho hanging-wall section of the for- mation, xvhich earries Gft. of good quality stone. No. 5 east level is extended 12ft. The reef in this level has widened out since last re-
port, being now fully lift, between walls; reef varying from 3ft. to 12ft. of fair quality. No. 4 east level has been extended Oft. Reef is broken up at present. On the footxvall there is 3ft. of stono in the face of the level of fair quality. The stopes over level continue in thickness from 3ft. to 10ft. of good quality. No. 3 East Level : A xvinzo has been com- menced toxvards the eastern end for convenience to fill in the stope ovor No. 4 level, and sunk 32ft. under the reef. Stopes over No. 3 to No. 1 Levels : The reef varies in the different stopes from ISin. to Gft. of medium quality.
Toomba, May 7.-The south level has been extended a distance of 10ft.; total distance from shaft, llGffc. The forebreast shows Gin. of poor quality stone.
No. 2 South-east Day Dawn, May 7.-The distance sunk for the fortnight has been lift., making total distance sunk 58ft. The country passed through has been good for sinking, the grouud lying in floors, with formation and quartz veins intervening. The diorite bar is gradually going out.
Clark's Brilliant, Worcester, and Victory, May 10.-No. 1 crosscut has been ' extended lift., making a total distance of 39ft. The country we are in at present is hard red granite*. The drive from tin's crosscut towards
tho shaft is in a distance of 22ft. There has been a nice reef in this drivo varying in size from 9in. to 1ft., and showing good gold. It has gone up overhead at present. The hanging wall crosscut has been driven 19ft. for the fortnight. The country we are in is granite. The No. 2 crosscut has been driven a distance of 20ft. for the fortnight.
Five $300 scholarships for women in the State University have recently been endowed by Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, widow of Senator Hearst, of California. The candidates for these scholarships are to be recommended by the county superintendent, and no competitive examination will be required.
