REPORTS FROM THE COUNTRY.
[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH]
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.)
LAIDLEY, April 24.
Large and enthusiastic meetings were held at Laidley and Gatton on Saturday night by Mr. Hall and Mr. Armstrong respectively, the former being an Independent candidate, and the latter a Ministerialist. Mr. Hall advocatod the giving of a bonus on sugar grown by white labour, and he would provide for this by im- posing a tax on planters employing kanakas. Mr. Armstrong advocated giving the men employed on land-grant railways, if these were started, grants of land for fanning in the vicinity of the lines, in order to encourage settlement on the land. Mr. Hall's meeting at Laidley was the largest and most successful ever held in the district.
TOOWOOMBA, April 24.
Mr. Fogarty addressed a crowded meeting at Middle Ridge on Saturday night. A motion of confidence ,was carried unanimously, and the candidate received an ovation. The meeting broke up with cheers for Messrs. Groom and Fogarty.

Mr. Foxton addressed a meeting on Satur- day evening at the School of Arts. Mr. Hooper was in the ohair. The candidate said be was in favour of land settlement and supported the sugar , industiy, the opposition to the kanakas being mero senti- ment. If retrenchment made taxation neoessary he fa vom ed an income tax. A-land tax was virtually existing. He would support the Government independently until the Opposition offered better relief from the country's difficulties. He was against land-grant railways, though the Act was likely to remain a dead letter. Ho strongly deprecated the falsified maps and the menda- cious statements that had been made with reference to the land-grant scheme. Ho was opposed' to immigration except with regard to domestic servants, and was against the auction- ing of land except on the necessity to raise money. Mr. Woodcock moved a voto of con- fidence, which Mr. Marshall seconded, and it was carried, thero being only one dissentient. Boohooicg and noisy interruptions weie made from the outside of the hall during the pio

Mr. A. S. Cowley addressed the eleators of Herbert at Halifax on Thursday and at Ingham on Saturday evening, when ho met with a most enthusiastic reception, and a unanimous vote of confidence was accorded with loud cheering at both places. His election is regarded as an almost foiegone conclusion. He reviewed the work of the last Parliament, explaining the most Important measures passed. He defended the Government's action in assist- ing the meat company and their non action re the Constitution Bill. He eulogised Sir Thomas M'llwraith, stating that ho ranked amongst the foremost of Australian statesmen, and declared himself an ardent separationist. He was in favour of Sir Thomas M'Uwraith's manifesto, retrenchment and economy. As he is being opposed by a Labour candidate, he dealt exhaustively with their published programme, exposing what he claimed wero its fallacies.
