FIGHT AGAINST MACHINERY
AND NATURAL LAW.
v TO THE EDITOR. . '
Sir,-Thinking over Mr. Crase's letter of the 13th instant, it seems to me that, instead of going back only to Jus- tinian or to the Stoics, speculations in economic thought might reasonably be referred back as far as this :-Every man bom into the world has the right of personal liberty, the right of pro- perty, and the right to a full share of Nature's gifts-air, water, and land to use. Whoso takes away or curtails these rights must needs show sufficient reason. In times gone by the English Government, by its Statutes of Labour- ers, tried to fix a maximum wage ; in our times labour unions have tried to
fix a minimum wage. Both failed be- yond a certain mark, both are hurt- ful, for both cripple the Intelligent work- man to give a small advantage to the wastral ; both try to curtail one or two of the natural rights of man. In 1815 (Waterloo year) interested men, under the plea of " protection to native Industry" (wheat-growing), passed through a landowners' Parliament the Corn Laws, whereby the loaf was kept at famine price, and so landowners, by, means of their high rents, plundered the hungry poor for thirty years. In 1839 the Anti-Corn Law League was founded to do away with the Iniquity, and enforce free-trade because it is part of the natural right of property. The failure of the wheat and potato har- vests in 1840 forced the repeal of the Corn Laws and the triumph of free trade. From this account anyone can say whether free-trade or the thing misnamed protection is deserving of the epithet " cold-blooded." From that time till this no man has ever given a sufficient reason for "protection," a
sufficient reason for hindering a man In the disposal of his property.
Free-trade is not a theory of a school of economists ; it is every man's right ; and any Government that takes away that right helps ta impoverish its people, lowers them in civilisation, en- courages that monster monopoly, and puts a premium on selfishness and
animal instincts.
An outcome of the free-trade propa- ganda fifty years ago was trades union- ism. The wiser few looked to co- operation to better the workers' lot, and through that the worker : the ignorant many looked to combination and strikes. The result of both is in
evidence. Co-operative production is a mere matter of brains and education, but brains and education cannot be hired at trades union rates of pay.-
I am, sir. &c, MACUTE.

The estate to which our friend the Earl of Yarmouth is heir does not promise very big things for that young man. Lately the Marquess of Hertford, his father, had to inform his neighbours that he was unable to keep up the family seat, Ragley, as it should be kept, and consequently had had to let it. Fortune has hardly been kind to the present line of the Hertfords. When the fourth marquess died he stripped his successor of everything he could touch in favour of the late Sir Richard Wallace, and now the income is insufficient for so costly a place as Ragley. The Earl of Yar- mouth, who some months ago was electrify- ing Australia with his acting and skirt danc- ing In the cause of charity, should have ac- cepted the offer of £300 a week for a season of eight weeks, which rumour says was made him in Melbourne. It would hare been a material help to the family finances
