A SPLENDID BANNER.

The banner which has been designed for the Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society and perfected by the Sisters and students of the St. Anne's Industrial and Technical School will form a record of work and beauty of which that school may (well be proud. One side of the banner sym- bolises Hibernian nationality, the reverse side Australasian. Taking the inspired subject and artistic rendering first, we find the large, almost lifelike central figure le that oí St. Patrick as represented in our histories and legends of the fourth cen- tury, expelling all dire and evil things from Ireland. The figure is well proportioned and symmetrical, ' the head noble and shapely, the features well-cut and clearly defined. The attitude is commanding, and the drapery falls in soft aesthetic folds and graceful outlines. The whole is wrought In hand-worked etltchery, yet the sublimity of the subject is maintained throughout. Viewed from a distance, the whole square centrepiece might be taken for an oil paint- ing. The nice gradations of colour are particularly noticeable in the shaded ponti- ficia! purple of the under-skirt and in the folds of the cleeves. The holy saint stands on rocky ground J>y the sea, he is crowned with a mitre, and holds in his hand a crozier. At his feet are reptiles which ' he is expelling from the land. In the

background is depicted one ot the ancle.it round towers of Ireland ; still farther back, cleverly carrying out the Idea of perspec- tive, a monastery stands upon a prominent headland. The sky Is cleverly managed by introducing a chine shot silk as a back- ground to the central square. The bordar 7foundation is of rich- gros-graim green Silk ,©f -very substantial texture, making the di- mensions of the banner 10ft. by 12ft. Upon this is 'worked Ireland's emblematic flower In conventional designs as a framework. At the top right-hand coj-ner, in gold em-

broidered letters, is the Inscription, "Erin-, go-bragh" ; on the top left-hand «ide, " God save Ireland." At the foot of the banner ' on the left hand, An raised gold embroidery,

is the harp of Erin, with the inscription, "Faith" ; on the right-hand a'harp with " Fatherland" inscribed. In the centre, between these two, is the large coat-of arms of the Hibernian Society and the Runic Cross, under which the words " Faith, Hope, and Charity" are em- broidered. The lower edge Is finished with a fine gold fringe about 4)n. in depth. From the top of the banner and on either side are long pendants of rich green and old gold streamers and cords and tassels.

Turn we now to the reverse, or Austral- asian side, of this magnificent banner. Very wisely, .the foundation is of bright gold satin. The top central design is a beauti- fully worked cross, beneath which comes a scroll upheld on either side by angels. These figures are happily delineated, giving the impression of aerial motion ; the drap- ery is floating, and the scroll is curved. Beneath this scroll and in the centre of the banner the large coat-of-arms of Aus- tralia is embroidered, with the inscription "'Advance Australia" beneath, the, sup- porters being an emu ort the left and kan- garoo on the right. The ?whole is over- shadowed and mellowed by foliage and fern fronds. A meandering border of the white flannel-flower, appliqued in raised white velvet, completes this gorgeous golden Australian side. The banner has taken eighteen months to design and work, five palra of hands Work dng at it dally together ; and I may per- haps be permitted to mention, in honour to our colony, that the Sister who drew the figures, synfbolsi and traceries Is an Aus- tralian'by birth, and educated in Brisbane.

Advance Australia !
