WHARF LABOURER SELLS LIQUOR.
When Charles John Pattie, wharf labourer. Pal- merston street. Carlton, was charged at the Carlton Court on Tuesday with having sold liquor without
a licence he told Mr. W. G. Smith, P.M., and
Mr. J. Carden, J. P., that he was out of work through the coal strike, and had a wife and family to support.
Sergeant Loveridge said:—At 10 o'clock on the night of May 22, in Station street, I handed a 10/ note to a police agent, and gave him certain in- structions. Later on he returned from a cottage in Palmerston street with three bottles of ale and 4/ change. I entered the cottage, and when I saw Pattie he admitted charging the police agent 6/ for the three bottles of ale. Pattie handed to me the marked 10/ note.
Pattie was fined £25, in default two months' im-prisonment.
