The Hobbs Drive
The accompanying illustration of an English light car engine fitted with the Hobbs infinitely variable gearbox illus- trates the progress which is being made in the adaptation of this interesting form of transmission which is the invention of
a South Australian, to the requirements of motor transport. Conventional gearbox
systems generallv provide three or at the most four forward gear ratios. In the
The Hobbs Gearless Drive, fitted to a 7-horse power engine. (a) Reverse control. (b) Propeller shaft coupling, (c) Flywheel and vibration damper. The whole of the Infinitely variable gear is contained between C and D, the position usually occupied by clutch flywheel and gearbox in a standard transmission system.
Hobbs gearbox, however, an infinite num ber of ratios up to a condition of direct drive is automatically attained. The me- chanism is extremely simple, and depends in principle upon the tendency of centri-
fugal force operating through the medium of two eccentrically pivoted weights to lock into a stationary position two circulating or "star" wheels running about the peri-
phery of a central or "sun" pinion. To
this simple mechanism is added a vibration damping or power-smoothing device, as the tendency of the eccentric rotating weights is alternately to retard and then ac-
celerate the "slip" in the mechanism until a condition of direct drive is reached. The mechanism is controllable to provide a re-
verse gear.
