PORT ELLIOT SHOW.

Port Elliot, one of the moM. popular watering-places in the State, wore holiday attire on Thursday, the occasion being the thirty-third annual show in connection with the Southern Agricultural Society. That body possesses an ideal show ground within easy distance of the beautiful îoek-bound coast. Tlie annual fixture i-> a decidedly popular one, as, besides seeing a good all- round display of exhibit?, visitors also take th« opportunity ot spending the rest or tlie time at their disposal watching the huge breakers dashing into ' ihe «olid granite

bouldeis.

Thursday was a rough, windy day, but this dill'not prevent a highly satisfactory attendance being recorded. The entries in the majority of classes were well up to the average, and the .society lias every reason to congratulate itself on the success of tlif show. The sum ot .655 was taken at the' gates, as against £56 last year, when a record was established. Amongst the visi- tors wcie -the members for the district (Me«srs. C. Tucker, A. McDonald, XV. J. Blacker, and G. Ritchie). Mr. 0. XV. Col- man (the secretary) did his vi ork in a man- ner which left nothing te be desired.

The other official-- of the society are: President, Mr. A. Battye; vice-presidents, Mesare. James McLeocl, Hamilton Welch. G. A. Boxall, James Chambers, treasuicr, Mr. Joseph Field: committee. Messrs. C. XV. H. Basham, S. W. Padman, .1. O. Coucher, Jacob Abbott. John Brown, John Abbott, T. Fisher, AV. Fisher, A. Hutchi- son, C. H. Bebee, F. Rou-se. W. W. Smith, Fred Swift, John Ding, Dv. Edgecumbe, J. W. Trigg, John Hart,- C. J. A. Hallett, Thomas Goode, James Ohibnail, M. Wake- field, H. J. Bird, XV. Grundy, D P. Bell, E. J^iy, John Lovell, As. . Hornsby. J. R Coote, S. \V. Jackman. J.-Tugwell, 0. i'ole man, O. Baanerr XV. ti. "Rogers, P. Qtgja ton. 11. XV. James, jon., J. G. Barton, Richard Turner, A. Monk, F. Provis, W. li. Hargreaves, XV. A. Carter, Caleb Gallen, and F W. Biitcsop. "" .?'

The display of hor.^e stock was mo3t grati- fying, the competition being good in almost every instance, whilst some of the animals were a credit to their owners. The best draught entire on the ground was adjudged to be Mr. J. Haskett'» line horse Kildare, General Buller, the property of Mr. XV. Fischer, securing second «award. Mr. J. W. Porter's roadster entire was the best in that section. The jumping events were well worth seeing. Two good fencers owned by Messrs. H. Welch and G. A. Maidment divided the amateur prize, and a horse from Sell's estate was chosen' as tlie best cross- country jumper. Great interest was cen- tred in the pony jumping, which was keenly contested. A handsome little animal be- longing to Messrs. Jackson snd Smith secured the coveted ticket, whilst Mr. G. A. Maidment's pony was second. He was ridden by Miss Daisy Maidment, a clever little horsewoman. The Mounted Infantry group jumping, and also the individual rid- ing and jumping- for Mounted Inïantry, were well contested. ? '< ;

The hills surrounding ' Port Elliot are noted for their fine gardens, and the fruit from the orchards of Mi".' 'J. Dodd and Mr. S. Trestrnil left little to be cleared. A fea- ture of this section was the splendid straw- berries exhibited by Mr. Dodd. They were large and sound," and attracted much atten- tion. Mrs. Colby, of Mount Lofty, carried all before her iu dried fruits, and Messrs. J. Tugwell and Sons, of Encounter Bay, showed some well-grown' vegetables, and

were successful in 13 out of the 17 varieties. Mr. W. Porter, who manages Mr. J.-- W. Porter's Encounter Bay estate, is tin enthu- siastic gardener, and with' three exceptions he beat all-comers in the class set apart for flowers. His splendid blooms showed that they had had great care and attention be-, stowed upon them. There was a good dis- play of poultry and cattle. Considering the lateness of the season the show of sheep was highly creditable, as ac this time of tho year breeders do not care' to keep wool on their stock. Sell's estate was most' success- ful in this class. The grain was exception- ally good, and Mr. D. Leak, of Bullapringa (about 40 miles from Port Elliot) well de- served the success he obtained. Little fault could be found with the dairy produce, competition being keen, and honors fairly evenly divided. Considerable interest was taken in the school exhibits, four public schools-Port Elliot, Victor Harbor, Mid- dleton and Hindmarsh,' J$ft4id-^ptnpeting.. The soéiety provided Xs in, ,pri'¿es for this section, and the children,'.«' work showed that they appreciated the, opportunity of displaying their skill. ' '., .
