BENDIGO RACES.
THE ABBESS WINS THE CUP.
Melbourne, November 26.
The annual race meeting in connection with the Bendigo Jockey Club was com- menced to-day in cool and pleasant weather and attracted a very large attendance. The principal event on the programme was the Sandhurst Cup, for which 14 started. With Fairy States scratched, his stable com- panion, Annotate, was made favorite, while there was a great run at the last moment on Godwin, who i\as backed from 8 to 1 down to 7 to 2. Godwin went to the front at the early stage of the race, but Tlie Abbeys was always close up. The pair were together at the distance, and an exciting finish ended in favor of The Abbess by a head, Omrah, wh%
was runnine onjat the (¡nish, being third. Annotate, who luid a very bad run. being twice knocked back, was just behind the placed horses. Tlie winner, who was an outsider, was ridden by W. Burn. Until this morning it was arranged that Burn should ride Cluster, but as he would have been compelled to put up 4 lb. overweight he was put up on The Abbess instead. He quite outrode Dunn, who made too much use of Godwin. There was a Hobart sweep on the race, but. there was no word as to the result of the', drawing before the race. Tlie race was a good betting one, and mem- bers of the ring must have done well, as t'he winner was very little enquired for. Ap- pended are the íesiilts:
