Wednesday Evening.  

Two larrikins named William Worzeldine and Walter Daniels were charged at the police court to-day with being found in a public place with intent to commit a felony. There was a second charge of vagrancy. Ser- geant O'Hare stated that about 10 o'clock last Friday evening he observed the prisoners loitering about in a suspicious manner, and then go up the lane at the rear of Messrs. Bright and Hitchcock's establishment. He followed them, and arrested Daniels, and Worzeldine was afterwards found in an empty packing case behind the drapery shop. He had not known the prisoners do any- thing for a living. Mr. Cakebread stated that on the 28th ult., his office was broken into. On the morning of the 29th he found a blank cheque on his desk with the word "bearer"   written on it by one of the robbers. Sergeant O'Hare stated that he got Daniels to write the word "bearer," and the writing was similar   to that on the blank cheque. Worzeldine, in defence, stated that he was in the employ- ment of a nightman when he was arrested, and always earned an honest livelihood. Daniels made no defence. Worzeldine was

sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, and Daniels to nine months', in the Geelong Gaol.  

The ceremony of laying the foundation   stone of the new shire-hall and court-house  

at Drysdale was performed to-day by Mr. George Henderson, the senior councillor of the shire, in presence of a large number of the residente of the locality. A banquet was afterwards held in the Buck's Head Hotel.

Councillor M'Master, president, occupied the chair, and Mr. J. E. Bootes the vice-chair. The building is to be of brick, and will be an

ornament to the district.

At the monthly meeting of the Bellerine Shire Council, held yesterday, Councillor M'Master was unanimously re-elected presi- dent, on the motion of Councillor Henderson, seconded by Councillor Smiley. There was a discussion as to whether the four days be- tween the election of councillors and election of president had elapsed. It was ultimately decided that the requisite period had inter- vened, and the election was therefore pro-

ceeded with.

During the year 1878 the number of ships that entered and left the Italian ports with cargoes was 188,154-sailing vessels, 23,519;

steamers, 7,919-of 25,253,102 tons, and manned by 411,023 sailors. Of this number, 171,058 were Italian and 17,496 of foreign nationality. In addition to these there       were 128,237 coasting vessels and 29,479 steamers.
