SYDNEY.

At six on Wednesday evening His Ex- cellency the Governor returned from an Excursion to Parramatta and Hawkes- bury.

It is at length in the contemplation of several spirited individuals to open a safe and commodious passage, in as direct a line as circumstances will permit, from the high street to the most central part of the Rocks. For the accomplishment of so laudable a purpose no situation appears more eligible, or likely to be attended with less labour and expence (if actually taken in hand), than the line extending across the lower part of Mr. Kable's garden ground, which he had

previously determined to convert into a car-       riage road as far as his own stabling. The imminent danger and extreme fatigue that has hitherto attended the labour of exploring the cra.k and slippery avenues which at present afford the only comunication with this exalted region, must with the completion of the measure disappear ; and as the gene- rality of its inhabitants acknowledge a de- cided preference in favour of a situation

whose commanding prospects justify that   preference, we sincerely hope that none will be found tardy in affording the assistance ne- cessary to render its ascent practicable with ease and safety.

On Tuesday the body of the Lascar, who unfortunately lost his life in the Lady Bar- low on the 16th ultimo, was picked up at Dawes's Point, and decently interred.

An extraordinary depredation was com- mitted on the night of Tuesday last, at the untenanted house of Mr. Mann, in the row leading from the lower end of South Row into that of Back Row East : the glazed sashes of which were every one carried off. Next day they were found by some children diverting themselves in the brush behind the latter, but in a state of improved transparen- cy, as all the glass had been taken out, & the frames thus disposed of by the ingenious pil- lager, whose perhaps suspicious character suggested the apprehension of a search possi- bly taking place: in the event of which he very naturally inferred, that 'a bird in the bush was worth two in the hand." in spite of cunning and precaution, however, suspi- cion perched upon a man whose general conduct had attracted a jealous eye, and much       to the satisfaction of the neighbourhood the suspected bird of night retired to his cage.

A small boat with a couple of labouring men on board employed in procuring fuel, sunk on Wednesday off Long-Nose Point, owing to her being overburthened ; and but for the assistance at a truly critical moment afforded by a Gentleman's pleasure boat, one or both the poor men had inevitably pe- rished. One of these people, neither of whom could swim, still managed to main- tain his footing on one of the thwarts, of the boat, which although in deep water had only gone down about five feet, her loading having rolled or floated out : the other had supported himself for some time with the aid of a small billet providentially cast within his grasp ; but yielding to terror and des- pair, his little supporter grew tired of its burthen, and, just upon the point of sinking,   the Fates miraculously announced a respite.

The manner in which the noxious insect mentioned in our last to have done much injury to the growing wheat is, by preying upon the top of the plant, & upon the tender part of the stalk, which diminishing its sus- tenance, perishes the grain.-In speaking of the grub, the Complete Husbandman says, that " it is a large maggot produced from the eggs of a certain species of butterfly : It is of a large size, and often does great injury to the corn by undermining it, & preying on the roots. It produces the beetle, and is by some

called the rook-worm, because rooks are par-     ticularly fond of it. The best way of destroy- ing the grub is good and frequent ploughings, which will clear the ground, however infest- cd with this insect, for some years at least.

A poor woman going up Pitt's-Row on Monday night last after dark, and either ig- norant or heedless of the prodigious vacuum occasioned by the washing down of the bridge, unfortunately fell in, & was not only severe- ly bruised by the fall but had her arm much cut by a case bottle which she had in her hand when the accident happened,

A serious affray between two labourers took place on Thursday at Parramatta, in conse- quence of some abusive language on both sides.   One of them armed himself with a club, and   the other with a handsaw, with which he so severely wounded his an.ago just above one   of the wrists as in all probability to deprive

him for ever of the use of his hand.

Among the numerous charges for high     crimes and misdemeanors alledged against     the native canine brood, one of a most serious nature is exhibited by an eccentric humour- ist of Parramatta : nor can the depravity of the graceless offender admit too harsh an       a. epithe.. A little lap-dog, whose polished manners had highly recommended him to   attention & esteem, was for the preservation   of his health acommodated with a warm apartment in the oven ; to which in the course of the night his profligate fellow-crea- ture, prowling for prey, unfortuntely found access, and with unparalelled voracity lite- rally demolished the puny favorite.
