BURNT TO DEATH.
TARADALE, MONDAY.
On Sunday Mr. Mark Laurence brought the news of his fathers untimely death into Taradale. The deceased Mr. Thomas Laurence, was an old resident of the town, and followed the occupation of a charcoal-
burner. He prepared a kiln last week, and went out from his home to fire it on Thurs- day ; he was not expected to return till Saturday, but as he failed to appear, his son Mark, who is employed at the Achilles Company's mine, paid a visit to the locality for the purpose of ascertaining the reason for his father remaining in the bush. He found the kiln, which was supposed to contain 150 bags of charcoal, completely burnt away. He then made a minute search for his father, but finding no trace of him, he (the son) took up a rake and discovered a quantity of human bones which he is satisfied are all that is left of his parent. Constable W.
French, in charge of Taradale, returned with the son to the site of the kiln yesterday and brought in all the charred remains, which were burnt to a cinder, the whole being placed in a small 7lb. oatmeal bag. The deceased who was 60 years of age, was a most industrious man, and leaves a grown up family , two of his sons are in the employ of the Railway department. An in- quest will be held.
