MELBOURNE, November 19.

Owing to the insistence by tho Legis- late Council on its amendments in the Shops and Factories Act, and the refusal of the Assembly to accept tho amend- ments, a conference is to bo held be- tween representatives of the two Cham- bers.

VICTORIAN RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

The annual pmo meeting of the Vic- torian Rifle Association was continued

to-day. y The weather conditions dur- ing the morning were favourable, but in the afternoon the light was not good, and a strong bree7o was trouhlesomo. Tho shooting, all round, was geod but no one succeeded in registering the^high cst possible.

Interest centred to-day m the second stage of the King's Prize Competition, twenty shots at 6U0 yaid^ R. Costin, of Port Melbourne, who carried all be- fore him in the first stage, retained his place at the head of the list with a fine score of 03 out of a possiblo 100, which, added to jciterday's score of 102, brought his aggregate for two stages to 135, or tw o points better than the Bisley aggregate of Corporal Kerr, of the Dum-

bartonshire Volunteers, who shot under exactly the same conditions. Costin thus put up a world's record. .

The highest scorer in the second stage wah W. C. Addison, of South Australia, who put up 96, with 10 bulls and four centres. Each of the centres passed out sido the bulls'-eyo boundary.

Only the 10 highest scorers in the first and second stage aggregate are en- titled to shoot in the final stage. The fortv includes inter-State competitors as follow - W. C. Addison (S.A.) eighth, with 1SS J. T. Lake (S A.) eleventh, with 185 : G. Spencer (N S W.) 22nd, with 185, Scrgt. Soden (Q ) 23rd, with 185, J. Harrigan (N.S W.) 25th, with 184, and a private, C. Morris (N.S.W.) lath, with 184.

Thero were five ties for first place in the individual prizo list in the Lambie match ton shot» at 500 yards. The com- petition is reilly for teams of four, but is also open to individual marksmen un- der 30 years of ago. The top individual scores, were made by S. A. Long, C. Sanderson, J. C. Jenkins, W. J. Tuck and G. Kefford-all Victorians, who each got within ono point of the pos- sible, and will shoot off. ,

Considerable excitement was caused this morning at Glenelg by a tidal wave which suddenly broke heavily on the beaah, about 200ft. above high-water mark. Tho tide rose 0ft. m le:« than five minutes, and bathers qinckly de- parted from the baths, and masses of seaweed were carried up Patawalonga Creek for half a mile, the creek running

a banker.

WELLINGTON, November 19.

The decision in the magisterial in- quiry concerning the wreck of the steamer Ventnor was given to-day.

The finding was to the effect uhat there was no doubt that negligence or incompetence was the cause ot the dis- aster. The captain seemed to have done all possible for the safety of the crew and 6hup after the vessel struck, but the re- sponsibility must rest with the captain

alone.

The officers were exonerated, and their certificates returned.
