JAPS GET OWN BOMBS BACK

Raids By Beauforts

Large numbers of Japanese bombs, mostly 1101b, discovered at But and Dagua. dromes are now being: dropped on enemy positions in the hills behind Wewak and in the mountain country beyond Maprik by RAAF Beauforts operating in support of the 6th Australian Divi-

sion,

When Wewak and Boram dromes were captured, bombs, both set out as booby traps and dumped in the kunai fringing the strips, were cap- tured in great numbers. Great care was required of the engineers; in removing the bombs, which had been planted as mines to the ap- proaches and round the dispersal areas of the dromes.

The bombs were planted nose up, and some were not fused. It ap- peared an easy task to pull them out, but underground wires were connected with booby traps, so that it was necessary to dig most care- fully right round the bombs and feel underneath for hidden connections before the missiles could be lifted.

In the areas where aviation stores were dumped behind Wewak and Boram were stocks of fuses, and, as many of these were serviceable, the bombs can now be used by the Ail

Force.
