| When the Foreign Legion Retreated A Dramatic But Tragic Story of the French Revolt Against Japanese Domination in Indo-China This Year This is the dramatised story, based in its entirety on the personal accounts of survivors, of the grim retreat from Tong, in French IndoChina, to Szemao, in south-western China, of the First and Second Battalions of the 5th French Foreign Legion. Before the uprising on March 9 anti-Japanese elements of French forces in Indo-China were being secretly prepared for a coup d'etat. By March French commanders had assembled, on the pretext of staging training and battle manoeuvres, a large French force in the town of Tong, near Hanoi. The majority of the troops, some of whom were collaborating with the Japanese, were unaware of the plan to revolt, but the enemy became suspicious and began on March 9 to attack all French forces for the purpose of disarming them. Some stayed to fight, some legionnaires refused to leave Tong because they said it was a Legion tradition always to fight, never to retreat. Approximately 1,200 Legion soldiers left to fight their way to the freedom of China, at least 1,000 kilometres away. Roughly, 500 died or were killed in action on the terrible march out. Many, following the terrible valleys of the Rivers Rouge and Noire, covered 1,200 miles before they reached safety. Many died after they had reached Szemao. Most of the material used in this story comes from one of the survivors, Legionnaire Sergeant Edmund Murray, aged 27 years, of Durham, England, who after being cited for bravery, was honourably discharged in Kunming, China, so that he could rejoin the British Army, which he had left eight years before to become a member of the French Foreign Legion. | ENGLAND SCORES WELL HAMMOND THE STAR BATSMAN STILL AT WICKETS AT 169 GREAT FIELDING BY HOME TEAM MELBOURNE, Tuesday. By his innings to-day, Hammond has established himself as one of the greatest rungetters in the world. He added 157 runs to his score to-day, and when stumps were drawn was still undefeated with 169 to his credit. Another feature of the play was the good second wicket stand by Sutcliffe and Hammond, who added 133 before Sutcliffe was bowled. The Australian fielding was very keen throughout. Bradman and Richardson being particularly noticeable. The attendance was 31.455, and the takings £2,653.
