Now in his 73rd year the old time
horseman, Sammy Cracknell is hale and
hearty, and walks with an erect figure
that could do crdit to a man 20 years
younger. Cracknell now lives at Panton
some years and is fairly prosperous,
as an orchardist. Cracknell rode in races
from the sixties until 1890, and his two
principal victories were scored on Darri
well in the Melbourne Cup, and Cun
namulla in the Sydney Cup. Sammy,
when in his prime was a visitor to the
Tasmanian Cup carnivals.

Samuel Cracknell one of thebest known
of Australian horsemen, who died on Febru
ary 14, left an estate of a gross value of
4082. Cracknell, who lived at Panton
Hills, is bedcribe in his will as a retired
orchardist. His will was dated May 11,
1921, and Cracknell bequeathed real estate
of a gross value of 2,240 and personal pro
perty of a gross value of 1,822, to his chil
dren.
Cracknell won the Melbourne Cup on
Darriwll in 1879. He was one of the
jockeys seriously injured when 16 horses
fill in the tragic Caulfield Cup of 1885.

got a speargrass seed in his throat, and
his mother, thinking that she had removed
it, took no jfurther notice. Soon there
was a discharge from the child's ear,
and arrangements were made to take the
child to a specialist. When washing the
child recently the mother noticed some-
thing protruding from the ear, and to her
surprusem found the seed. The child is
now showing no ill-effectos of his experi
ence.
