| Family Notices The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954) Saturday 18 December 1937, page 9 Family Notices | 1 | epicurus 2010-03-05 14:48:35.0 | I would like to know if the Mr. Casserly mentioned in the story is Thomas Casserly, Mayor of Petersham. |

The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954) Friday 5 June 1896, page 5 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-12-22 15:13:43.0 | "bastard imperial instinct" was the phrase used in a similar story at http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/9307100?searchTerm=bastard |

| THE SOUDAN EXPEDITION. VIEWS OF MR. JOHN MORLEY. LONDON, June 4. The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954) Friday 5 June 1896, page 5 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-12-22 15:02:19.0 | First word on the last line looks long enough to be 'animal'. The image is poor but context fits. |
| THE TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Wednesday 24 June 1903, page 6 News | 2 | epicurus 2009-12-21 12:02:47.0 | Owen Bastard, the son of John Bastard, nephew of Charles Bastard and grandson of Thomas Bastard. |
| THE SWIMMING MASTER. TAUGHT 10,000 PEOPLE. CHAT WITH MR. C. BASTARD. MEN WHO COULD NOT SWIM. AND SOME CHAMPIONS WHO COULD. (By our Special Reporter.) The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Saturday 7 March 1914, page 6 News ILLUSTRATED | 1 | epicurus 2009-12-20 14:00:26.0 | The article stated that that Charles Bastard's father Thomas Bastard came out in 1852. It was actually July 1853 on the 'William Stuart'. |
| GENERAL MEETINGS OF CREDITORS. The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) Tuesday 7 December 1897, page 3 News | 2 | epicurus 2009-12-18 20:03:06.0 | The last line is very very poor. |
| CORONERS' INQUESTS. To the Editor. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Saturday 8 September 1906, page 15 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-12-12 21:40:06.0 | This is a really poor image. Any chance of a rescan? |
| THE TRAMWAYS. THE TRAINING OF DRIVERS. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Thursday 18 July 1907, page 6 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-12-11 18:09:25.0 | I found the lines getting ahead of the text as I was correcting. So much so that the last line had to be extended by about 8 lines. |
| THE LATE MR. KELLY. SUCCESSFUL CHARITY CONCERT. PROCEEDS, ONE HUNDRED POUNDS. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Monday 21 September 1908, page 9 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-11-29 15:58:12.0 | I have edited the last line on the strength of a third party opinion to read "A Trip Through Samoa". There was a black and white silent film made in 1905 called "A Trip Through Samoa and the Fiji Islands." |
| KELLY FUND. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Thursday 24 September 1908, page 9 Detailed lists, results, guides | 1 | epicurus 2009-11-23 18:38:31.0 | I noticed this line "the family will in few weeks be increased". In a letter to the editor called "A Distressing Case" published on the 10th September in which J O'Donnell said the youngest is just days old I was puzzled as I have studied the family as a great grandson of Laurence Kelly. I know no birth was registered before, or around the death of Laurence Kelly. The wife Agnes Kelly died on October 20 1908, just 6 weeks after the fatal accident that killed her husband. I may be that "Aggie" was pregnant and died in childbirth along with the child. She was very sick in the days before her death. It has been touching to read about the community response to this tragedy that left the 6 boys, Harry, Lawrence Patrick, Owen James, Cyril Augustine, James John and Phillip Gordon orphaned. I will pass pass the results of this research onto such other descendants of Laurence as I can track down and to any historical societies who care to want it. |
| MELBOURNE CRIMINAL SESSIONS. The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) Saturday 15 November 1873, page 7 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-11-23 12:03:17.0 | The Elizabeth shannon in question had a naiden name of Watson. Not my gt gt grandmother. |
| MELBOURNE CRIMINAL SESSIONS. (Before his Honour Mr. Justice Williams.) OLD COURT-HOUSE—WEDNESDAY, OCT. 15. THE QUEEN V. ELIZABETH SHANNON. The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) Thursday 16 October 1873, page 7 News | 2 | epicurus 2009-11-23 11:59:48.0 | It now seems that the Elizabeth Shannon involved had a maiden name of WATSON. That clears my gt gt grandmother. From an inquiry at rootsweb http://tinyurl.com/yewmhrr Ruth Hopkins Shannon, parents Thomas Shannon and Elizabeth Watson (Reg. #1872) Died Carlton 1873. Father unknown Mother Elizabeth Watson |
| LATEST TELEGRAMS. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] [BY TELEGRAM.] ADELAIDE Sept. 3. Northern Territory Times and Gazette (Darwin, NT : 1873-1927) Friday 11 September 1908, page 3 News | 2 | epicurus 2009-11-23 10:29:11.0 | Kelly's age is subject to uncertainty. See comments added for the "Tram Fatality" story on page 6 in the Advertiser of the 8th for an explanation of these issues. The accident occurred on Monday, September 7, 1908 and not Thursday the 10th as implied in this story. |
| MELBOURNE CRIMINAL SESSIONS. The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) Saturday 15 November 1873, page 7 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-11-22 18:32:41.0 | Is this Elizabeth Shannon married to a Frederick Shannon? Is her maiden name Bastard, eldest daughter of Thomas Bastard of Adelaide? I've just gota find out. |
| MELBOURNE CRIMINAL SESSIONS. (Before his Honour Mr. Justice Williams.) OLD COURT-HOUSE—WEDNESDAY, OCT. 15. THE QUEEN V. ELIZABETH SHANNON. The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) Thursday 16 October 1873, page 7 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-11-22 18:25:18.0 | I need to check this case out. It is very disturbing. A great great grandmother of mine up for child murder? I need to eliminate her as a suspect if I can. Yaks! if she is the one. |
| THE LATE MR. KELLY. SUCCESSFUL CHARITY CONCERT. PROCEEDS, ONE HUNDRED POUNDS. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Monday 21 September 1908, page 9 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-11-22 17:52:57.0 | The Globe Picture is mentioned right in the last sentence as putting on 2 films for the benefit. The first is quiet clear as "The Land of Sampson" but the second is elusive. My best guess is A Time something something. The imaging of the last line is very poor. |
| A TRAM FATALITY. A DRIVER RUN OVER. CRUSHED BY THE WHEELS. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Tuesday 8 September 1908, page 6 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-11-22 17:42:38.0 | The age of Lawrence Kelly (or Laurence as he was also known as) is fuzzy). This newspaper article states that Kelly was about 40. His grave at West Terrace gives an age of 39. His death certificate states his age as 37 but his marriage certificate for 28 September 1895 gives an age of 23 and that suggests he would have been 36 at the time of his death. There is no birth certificate for Laurence/Lawrence Joseph Kelly for the period 1869-72. He may have been registered as "Landers Kelly" on 5 January 1872 because his sister Mary and her partner George Day and brother-in-law to Lawrence inserted memorial notices in 1909 and 1911 on the anniversaries of his death on September 7 and wife Agnes October 20 just 6 weeks after Lawrence. The father in the marriage index is a Patrick Kelly, married to a widow Sarah Keough (nee Slattery), mother of Mary and Landers. |
| A DISTRESSING CASE. To the Editor. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Thursday 10 September 1908, page 6 News | 1 | epicurus 2009-11-21 23:41:55.0 | The part of this letter "He had a family of six young children, the youngest only a few days old," puzzled me. As a great grandchild of Laurence/Lawrence Joseph (Larry) Kelly I have studied his family as part of my family research. First child Harry was born in 1895, then Lawrence Patrick Kelly in 1898, Owen James in 1900, Cyril Augustine in 1902. Frederick William in 1905 (d. at 6 months without the death being registered but with a funeral notice in the 'Tizer and a grave record at West Terrace Cemetery being the proof), James John in 1906 and Phillip Gordon in 1907.I can think that wife Agnes may have been pregnant and that this may have something to do with her early death just six weeks latter. |
