From an early period, it seems to have been confined to a ship (in reference to which its immediate source baft is also found in the 14th c.); the bows are the foremost, and the stern the aftermost part, hence abaft means ?In the after part or stern half of the ship.?

There is much skilful and attractive work
in the sixth annual exhibition of the Aus-
tralian Art Association which is to be
opened at the Athenaeum Hall this
afternoon. The time of war in which we
live is brought to mind by "The Saphead,"
in which Mr. Penleigh Boyd has used Ihis
expencnce at the front in the realistic
painting of a bit of trench life, the soldier
faces showing variety beneath their metal
helmets in the sunlight. A typical Aus-
tralian landscape of grouped trees, with a
blue range of hills, is treated with good
feeling by the same artist in "Afternoon."
