  • ENGLAND RETAINS ASHES MAGNIFICENT BATTING WINS TEST HOBBS AND SUTCLIFFES PART IN WIN BY THREE WICKETS MELBOURNE, Sunday. England, retains the ashes by virtue of winning the third successive Test by three wickets. Australia, with everything in its favour for the winning of the Third Test, had victory snatched from its almost certain grasp by the magnificent batting of England's champions. Hobbs and Sutcliffe. The performance of Hobbs proved that he is as much as ever a master of the bat, and Sutcliffe's innings on a bad wicket was equal to anything he has done in the past. Grimmett and Ryder each bowled 55 overs during the innings, while Blackie bowled 39 overs for a cost of 75 runs. Australia fought the game to the finish, but England, despite the unfavourable wicket, won on her merits. [ tagged as Ashes Scorecards Cricket ]

  • ENGLAND'S BIG SCORE SECOND LARGEST IN SYDNEY HAMMOND FLOGS BOWLERS FOR 201 SYDNEY Monday. The Australian bowling was treated unmercifully by the English batsmen, in the Second Test match, which was resumed at the Sydney Cricket Ground, to-day. It was the batsmen's day horn the outset. England's luck still held, for although heavy showers threatened all day yesterday, there was no sign of rain today, and the wicket was in perfect condition. Hammond's innings was seemingly effortless, and practically faultless. He attacked the bowling with vigour throughout the long, hot day, and it was only during the last hour that he showed signs of tiredness, and when stumps were drawn he was still undefeated for 201. The score is the second highest ever made by Englishmen in a Test match on the Sydney Cricket Ground. It included 24 fours. Jardine gave a very disappointing exhibition, and the rate of scoring was nearly six times as slow as that of Hammond. [ tagged as Cricket ]
