Nine Catalina's will carry five officers and 130 other ranks. Their first stop will be Labuan in North Borneo. Dakotas carrying approximately 43 will leave later in the day. The formal surrender of Singapore by the Japanese has been fixed for Wednesday morning. To participate in the occupation of the island, Australian paratroops have arrived from Labuan Island and have joined up with the British Forces.

Wizened, prematurely old, and suffering from malnutrition and tropical diseases, the men, including some Australians, were all from the notorious Pakanzaroe camp. They told stories of brutal beatings, of food shortage, and of the heart-breaking work by their comrades who gave their lifeblood to build the central Sumatra railway.
