We want this site to be useful to its users. These terms of use are intended to allow us to work together to create a resource that is valued by the community.

When you participate in this site you must:

    This is a place to share information relevant to the contents of historic Australian newspapers. Post valuable, honest, relevant information and make your comments useful and informative.

  • act responsibly

    You are responsible for your actions while participating in this community. Try to make everyone in the community feel comfortable and their contributions valued.

  • respect the copyright and intellectual property rights of others

    Get permission from the owner before contributing copyrighted content, or better still encourage the owner to publish it themselves.

  • provide your contributions under the Creative Commons Share and Share Alike license

    The Library requires a non-exclusive license to distribute, copy and preserve your content. We ask you to share that with the community under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.1 Australia License.

  • contribute content that will not offend

    As a consequence the Library is not liable for any loss, claim or damage of any kind resulting from your use of this website.

  • revoke your account, comments and contributions at anytime without discussion or explanation;
  • modify these terms of use from time to time;
  • terminate the service at any time.

Full Terms and conditions of use for the NLA's Australian Newspapers service

Your use of the National Library of Australia's (NLA) Australian Newspapers Service constitutes your agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions of use, as may be changed, amended or modified from time to time at the NLA's sole discretion and without notice.

These terms must be read in conjunction with any terms and conditions appearing on the NLA website, including terms as to privacy and copyright.

Creative Commons Share and Share Alike license. As a user of the Australian Newspapers Service you grant to NLA a non-exclusive license to distribute, copy and preserve your content under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.1 Australia License.

Copyright. You must not upload or transmit to the Australian Newspapers Service any copyright material of which you are not the owner, unless you have the express written permission of the copyright owner to do so.

Postings to be lawful. You must not post, upload or transmit any messages, data, information, text, tags, comments, graphics, links or other material (Postings) which are unlawful or abusive in any way, including but not limited to any Postings that are defamatory, pornographic, obscene, threatening, offensive, invasive of privacy, or which would constitute or encourage a criminal offence, or give rise to liability under, or breach, any law.

Stay on topic. This is a place to share information relevant to the contents of historic Australian newspapers. Post valuable, honest, relevant information and make your comments useful and informative.

No Monitoring of Postings. The NLA does not intend to edit, monitor or screen Postings and is not responsible for the content in such Postings or any content linked to or from such Postings. However, the NLA reserves the right to examine from time to time, some, or all, of the Australian Newspapers Service for adherence to the Terms and Conditions of Use and to remove any Postings that may be objectionable or violate the Terms and Conditions of Use. You consent to infringement of any moral rights arising from the alteration or change of the material.

Non-Commercial Use only. The Australian Newspapers Service is provided solely for your personal use. As a participant, you must not include in your Posting(s) or otherwise distribute on or through the Australian Newspapers Service any content or material containing any advertising, promotion, solicitation for goods, services or funds or solicitation for anyone to become members of any commercial enterprise or organisation without the express written permission of the NLA. Any unauthorised use of any interactive area of the Australian Newspapers Service, its Content or Postings is expressly prohibited.

Registration. You agree to provide the NLA with accurate and complete registration information. It is your responsibility to inform NLA of any changes to that information. Each registration is for a single individual only, unless specifically designated otherwise on the registration page. NLA does not permit anyone other than you to use the sections requiring registration by using your name or password; or access through a single name being made available to multiple users on a network or otherwise. You are responsible for preventing such unauthorised use.

Limitation of Liability. The NLA is not liable for any loss, injury, claim, liability or damage of any kind resulting from your use of the Australian Newspapers Service, or for any facts or opinions appearing on or through the Australian Newspapers Service. The NLA is not liable for any special, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages of any kind whatsoever (including, without limitation, legal fees) in any way due to, resulting from, or arising in connection with the use of or inability to use the Australian Newspapers Service. To the extent that this limitation of liability is prohibited, NLA's sole obligation to you for damages is limited to $100.00.

Indemnity. You indemnify the NLA, its officers, directors, employees, agents, distributors and affiliates, and any third party information providers to the Australian Newspapers Service, from and against any or all third party claims, demands, liabilities, costs or expenses, including reasonable legal fees, resulting from any breach of these Terms and Conditions of Use by you. You must cooperate as fully as reasonably required in the defence of any such action.

Termination of access. The NLA reserves the right to withdraw or suspend the use of the Australian Newspapers Service by any person who uses the Australian Newspapers Service in breach of these terms and conditions. The limitation of liability and indemnity above survive any such termination. By registering with the National Library's Australian Newspapers Service you agree to these terms and conditions
